The Voice of California Winegrape Growers since 1974

The California Association of Winegrape Growers (CAWG) was founded over 50 years ago by a determined group of winegrape growers who recognized the need for a unified voice in an increasingly complex and competitive industry. At the time, unlike other specialty crop sectors, winegrape growers lacked a statewide organization focused solely on their needs. That changed with the formation of what was then called the Wine Grape Bargaining Association—created to establish fair and transparent grape pricing.

But the movement quickly evolved. As CAWG engaged with growers across the state, it became clear that pricing was just one of many challenges facing the industry. Issues like pest and disease control, water use, marketing, grade standards, research, and government relations demanded coordinated action.

In response, CAWG expanded its mission and scope. On December 16, 1974, the organization officially incorporated—marking the beginning of an enduring legacy of leadership, advocacy, and service to California’s winegrape growers.

Today, CAWG stands as the trusted voice of growers across California’s wine regions, representing their interests before policymakers, regulators, and the public. Our legacy is rooted in collaboration and fueled by a commitment to the long-term viability of our state’s world-renowned winegrowing industry.

The CAWG Foundation

The California Association of Winegrape Growers (CAWG) Foundation—a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, was established to support public education, fund scholarships, and advance research related to California’s wine and winegrape industry.

Each year, the foundation awards scholarships of up to $8,000 each to students planning to attend a University of California or California State University campus. It also offers two-year scholarships of up to $2,000 each for students attending a California community college.

In addition, the Robert Miller Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a student from the Central Coast who plans to study enology or viticulture at Allan Hancock College or Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

Scholarships are awarded to high school seniors whose parent or legal guardian is employed by a California winegrape grower. Since its inception in 1998, the foundation has awarded more than $680,500 in scholarships to 215 students. Each year, scholarships are granted, helping many recipients who might not otherwise be able to attend college pursue higher education.

The scholarship program was created as a gesture of appreciation for the employees who contribute to the success and culture of California’s winegrape and wine community. The CAWG Foundation is proud to offer this opportunity, made possible through generous donations from members of the California wine industry. The foundation works on behalf of everyone who helps make the wine industry a vital part of California life.
