Sacramento, CA, March 9, 2010 – Winegrape growers and vintners anxious to better understand why their “yes” votes are needed for the upcoming Pierce’s disease/Glassy-winged Sharpshooter (PD/GWSS) Referendum to continue the PD/GWSS assessment can now turn to a new comprehensive Web site: www.protectyourvineyard.com. Designed and launched by a coalition made up of the California Association of Winegrape Growers, Family Winemakers of California and Wine Institute, the new site provides in-depth analysis of the PD Referendum and the critical work the assessment has supported since 2001. California’s Winegrape Growers Look to the Future

Sacramento, Calif., Feb. 11, 2010 - Californiawinegrape growers knew 2009 was a good year for quantity and quality of grapes, but they didn’t expect this. According to the preliminary 2009 Grape Crush Report, grapes crushed for wine totaled 3,697 million tons, up from 3,015 million tons in the 2008 harvest. Red wine varieties accounted for the largest share of all grapes crushed, at 2,073 tons, up 24 percent from 2008. The 2009 white wine variety crush totaled 1,623 tons, up 21 percent from 2008. The 2009 average price of all varieties was $570.64, up 4 percent from 2008.

CAWG Celebrates 36 Years of Serving Grape Growers

The California Association of Winegrape Growers (CAWG) celebrated 36 years of service during their annual meeting held in Sacramento on Tuesday, January 26. CAWG Chair and Acting President, Kim Ledbetter Bronson addressed nearly 400 CAWG members during her “State of the Association” address.
The California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance (CSWA), established by Wine Institute and the California Association of Winegrape Growers, announced today the introduction of a statewide certification program that provides third-party verification of a winery or vineyard’s adherence to a "process of continuous improvement" in the adoption and implementation of sustainable winegrowing practices.

The California Association of Winegrape Growers (CAWG) board of directors elected a new slate of officers at its November meeting in Paso Robles, Calif. The board directs the only statewide group to focus exclusively on issues that impact winegrape growers. Member terms run for three years, and individuals are eligible to serve for a total of nine years.
Today, 10 years later, the future is looking brighter. A unique partnership of state, federal, and local agriculture departments, industry, and research institutions is not only controlling the pest, but through research is also building a foundation of new information and advances helping to close in on solutions to Pierce’s disease.
